John David Merwin

John David Merwin (born September 26, 1921 in Frederiksted on Saint Croix , US Virgin Islands , † March 17, 2013 in Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1958 and 1961 he was Governor of the US Virgin Islands.

Career

John Mervin graduated from the University of Puerto Rico and Yale University . He later embarked on a political career in the Virgin Islands as a member of the Republican Party . He became a member of the local House of Representatives, where he campaigned, among other things, for extensive tax exemption and tax relief for companies. On December 23, 1957, he became Secretary of State for his territory. On August 4, 1958, Merwin was proposed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as the new governor there and, after the approval of Congress , was introduced into his new office on September 25. In this role he solvedExit Walter A. Gordon . In his tenure, which lasted until April 5, 1961, he promoted tourism and planned a second airport on the island of Saint Thomas . This plan was abandoned by his successor. After the end of his governorship, John Merwin did not appear politically.

Merwin died at the age of 91 on March 17, 2013 in his home in the US state of Ohio.
