Charles Harwood

Charles A. Harwood (* 1880 in Brooklyn , New York , †  October 23, 1950 in Harrison , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1941 and 1945 he was governor of the US Virgin Islands .

Career

Charles Harwood attended Hamilton College and then studied at New York University . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1904, he worked in this profession until 1936. Between 1907 and 1910 he was a member of the New York State Assembly as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1936 he was assistant to the federal attorney on duty to prosecute several postal fraud cases; in 1937 and 1938 he served as a judge in the Panama Canal Zone .

Between February 3, 1941 and May 17, 1945, Harwood was the successor of Robert Morss Lovett, Governor of the Virgin Islands. During this time the Second World War fell . He died of a cerebral haemorrhage on October 23, 1950.
