Albert Katzenellenbogen (born January 15, 1863 in Krotoschin , † after August 1942 , murdered near Minsk ) was a German judicial councilor who played an important role in banking and industry.

Life

Katzenellenbogen came from a family whose origins are proven by an American genealogist as early as the 15th century and which are named after their German place of origin. He was married to Cornelia Josephine (Nelly) geb. Doctor. Since 1912, the couple lived in Königstein im Taunus in the “Oelmühlweg”, where Albert Ullmann and Oskar Kohnstamm were also neighbors at the same address .

The qualified lawyer was admitted to the bar in Frankfurt am Main from October 1891 and in July 1912 he was appointed to the judiciary.

Katzenellenbogen was a member of the leading bodies of banks, textile companies and chemical groups in various German cities. As chairman of the board he directed a. a. the fortunes of Mitteldeutsche Creditbank (Commerz- und Privat-Bank in Frankfurt). In 1895 he became the bank's syndic, in 1897 a member of the board of directors and in 1903 a member of the board of directors. After Commerzbank was founded, Katzenellenbogen was on the board of directors from 1929 to 1930 and then on the supervisory board until 1937.

With the beginning of the National Socialist era , Katzenellenbogen worked for a short time as an old attorney until he renounced his admission to the bar in October 1935.

The property of the Katzenellenbogen family was advertised for Aryanization in 1940 . In 1946 it was passed back to their descendants as family property via restitution.

Katzenellenbogen was deported from Frankfurt am Main to the Theresienstadt ghetto on August 18, 1942 , and was killed on August 25, 1942 with the transport "Bc-942" in the Maly Trostinez extermination camp. His wife died on April 19 as a result of a stroke. The stroke prevented the family from emigrating. The children Grete Helene, Marta Sofie (1897–1984) and the art historian Adolf Katzenellenbogen (1901–1964) emerged from the marriage . Their daughter Grete Helene (* 1893), daughter-in-law of Otto Berndt , perished as a slave laborer in Frankfurt am Main on March 22, 1944.
