history

Mitteldeutsche Creditbank was founded on February 29, 1856 by a consortium of Jewish bankers from Frankfurt am Main, Leipzig and Hamburg with headquarters in Meiningen, the capital and residence of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen . On this day, Duke Bernhard II granted the WF Jäger bank in Frankfurt am Main the license to set up a bank in Meiningen under the name “Mitteldeutsche Creditbank in Meiningen” to promote industry and trade. The bank had the right to issue of banknotes and awarded for the first time in Germany loans to industrial companies. The banknotes were printed by Dondorf & Naumann in Frankfurt am Main.

The bank quickly grew to become the seventh largest German private central bank , opened branches in all major banking locations and in 1874 had total assets of 35 million thalers. In 1875 it decided against the privilege of issuing private banknotes. She was also involved in founding the Deutsche Hypothekenbank Meiningen . In 1876 the bank's headquarters were relocated to Frankfurt am Main, but Meiningen remained the second headquarters until 1886 and then a subsidiary. The bank for Thuringia moved into the Meiningen bank building in 1905 . In 1929 Mitteldeutsche Creditbank merged with Commerz- und Privat-Bank AG .

Mitteldeutsche Creditbank reappeared briefly after the Second World War. As a result of the decentralization of the major banks, Commerzbank named its Hessian branch group Mitteldeutsche Creditbank. Under this name, the bank was active in Hesse from summer 1947 to autumn 1952.
