Albert Maennchen (born May 30, 1873 in Rudolstadt ; † January 12, 1935 in Berlin ) was a German painter , representative of decorative and monumental painting and fresco painter .

Life

Albert Maennchen was born on May 30, 1873 in Rudolstadt, Thuringia. His parents were the master tanner Carl Maennchen and his wife Emilie, geb. Güntsche. Albert was the third of eight children - his brothers Adolf, Gustav, Albert and Louis later all became painters or master painters. The mother gave the children the first art lessons. Albert's brother, twelve years older than him , the landscape and genre painter Adolf Maennchen (1860–1920), later took on the role of father and brought the family to Steglitz when the remaining father became heavily dependent on alcohol.

Albert Maennchen was able to complete elementary school in the spring of 1888 and began a two-year painting apprenticeship with the Berlin master painter Carl Lange . Until 1893 he worked as a painter's assistant and then as a master. His brother Adolf taught him drawing and painting since the 1890s.

Since 1890, Albert Maennchen has also attended day and evening courses at the Kgl teaching establishment parallel to his manual work . Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin . He studied ornamentation , decorative painting, sculpture, art history and architecture with Carl Zaar , Max Friedrich Koch , Alexander Kips , Ludwig Manzel and Peter Jessen . In 1897 and 1898 he was a student of the history painter Josef Scheurenberg at the College of Fine Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Maennchen did not get along with Scheurenberg, however, and therefore dropped out of the course early.

Between the summer of 1899 and the winter of 1906/1907 Maennchen went on four private further education trips to the Académie Julian in Paris for several months .

Albert Maennchen's great creative period ended in 1918. Decorative and monumental painting was no longer in demand after the First World War. He died on January 12, 1935 of complications from lung cancer.
