Albert Preis (born January 10, 1937 ) is a German soccer player who played at SV Waldhof Mannheim and was used once in the B national team and once in the DFB's U 23 junior national team in 1958 . From 1958 to 1967, the defensive player for Waldhof played 58 league games (1 goal) in the first-class football league south and 103 competitive games (17 goals) in the then second-class football regional league south . Statistical information on the number of stakes played by the defender in the 2nd League South from 1956 to 1958, 1959/60 and 1963/63 is not available. With Waldhof Preis won the championship in the 2nd league south in 1958 and 1960 and thus belonged to the two promotion teams of the blue-blacks from the Waldhof.

Waldhof Mannheim, 1956 to 1967

Second division and Oberliga Süd, 1956 to 1963

In his youth, Preis played at the Mannheim district club TSV 47 Schönau, before the defensive talent moved to SV Waldhof Mannheim in the second division south for the 1956/57 season. Soon he became the partner of regular defender Fritz Rößling and finished seventh in his debut season among the blue-blacks. A blatant away weakness (6:28 points) contrasted with a good home strength (31: 3 points). A main cause of the stagnation was the almost constantly changing team line-ups. For example, Waldhof competed in the 2-1 away win on May 19, 1957 at the relegated VfR Heilbronn in the following formation: Lennert (goalkeeper); Rößling, price; Grimbs, Leutwein, Cornelius; Hohmann (28 goals), Ledergerber, Lebefromm (22 goals), Zeiß and Straub.

Under coach Árpád Medve , the team from the Waldhofstadion on Alsenweg led in the second season of price, 1957/58, but unbeaten after seven days of the table. In the second half of the season Waldhof secured a 4-1 win against the previous championship leader VfL Neustadt in front of 18,000 spectators, on May 11, 1958 in the Waldhof Stadium in front of 17,000 spectators with a 3: 3 against runner-up TSG Ulm 1846 and a 3: 1 in last home game on June 8, 1958 against FC Bayern Hof, the championship and thus the return to the Oberliga Süd. Goalkeeper Lennert as well as the defender couple Rößling and Preis mainly formed the final triangle of the blue-blacks in the championship round.

The start in the league succeeded with two successes against SpVgg Fürth (3-2) and a 2-0 home win against VfB Stuttgart. Not only price seemed to have arrived in the Oberliga Süd. After the 1: 2 home defeat in the local derby against the blue-white-reds from VfR Mannheim on September 21 in front of 15,000 spectators, the promoted team ran out of steam. That culminated in the first half of the season in the 1: 9 home defeat on November 2, 1958 against FC Bayern Munich. After the preliminary round, SV Waldhof took the penultimate place in the table with 8:22 points. In the second half of the season the downward trend continued: In particular, the 3: 6 home defeat against bottom of the table BC Augsburg on February 15, 1959 destroyed the last hopes of relegation. The 8-0 defeat at 1. FC Nürnberg on March 7th and the 7-3 home defeat against Karlsruher SC on April 5th, 1959 fit into the desolate ideas of the second half of the season. With a 3: 3 draw on May 10, 1959 at FC Schweinfurt 05, SV Waldhof said goodbye to the 2nd League South. Price had appeared in 23 league games.

After completing the first half of the 1959/60 season, SV Waldhof finished fourth in the second league south. Klaus Sinn was now part of the team and Wolfgang Höfig acted as a middle runner . For the last and decisive home game against neighbor SpVgg Amicitia Viernheim on May 15, 1960 around 10,000 spectators came to the Waldhof Stadium. Waldhof celebrated the championship and the return to the Oberliga Süd with a 5-1 win. Price mostly defended with captain Fritz Rößling or Friedrich Behnke. In the top league round in 1960/61, when Waldhof achieved relegation in 13th place, Preis was only able to play five rounds due to injury. When in 1961/62 with two points behind FC Schweinfurt 05 on the saving 14th place, relegation to the 2nd League South took place, Price had completed all 30 league games and scored one goal. In the last year of the old 2nd League South, 1962/63, SV Waldhof took third place under coach Adolf Knoll and was thus qualified for the second-rate Regionalliga Süd starting from the 1963/64 season. Helmut Maklicza now acted as goalkeeper and Walter Walz was Preis's new partner in defense.

Regionalliga Süd, 1963 to 1967

In the debut year of the second-rate Regionalliga Süd, 1963/64, VfR Mannheim decided the local derby in the first half of the season against Waldhof 2-0, and Waldhof won the derby second leg with the final triangle Maklicza, Preis and Behnke on February 16, 1964 in front of 8,000 spectators 3: 1. The lawn players finished 6th, Waldhof 11th. Defender Price had scored three goals in 36 of 38 league games. In the second regional round, Waldhof moved up to fourth place in 1964/65. Price had scored five goals in 33 league games. Under coach Fred Hoffmann , Preis and colleagues achieved third place as the best placement in 1965/66 . The gap to the first two places (Schweinfurt 05 and Kickers Offenbach) was ten and nine points respectively. Preis had played in 30 games and scored nine goals. Various injuries prevented more than three further regional league missions in 1966/67. After a total of 103 league appearances with 17 goals, Albert Preis ended his higher-class career in the summer of 1967.

Selection games, 1958

On August 17, 1958, Albert Preis made his debut at the age of 21 in an away game with Waldhof Mannheim at SpVgg Fürth in what was then the first-class Oberliga Süd. With goalkeepers Kurt Lennert and Fritz Rößling he formed the final triangle of the blue-blacks in the 3-2 away win from SV Waldhof. On September 10th, the DFB held a test match between two teams of junior players U23 in Düsseldorf. Preis played at the 2-2 in the A-Team alongside goalkeeper Fritz Ewert , Willi Giesemann and Rolf Geiger . After the 1: 2 home defeat on September 21st in the local derby against VfR Mannheim, Preis was used on September 23rd in Kiel in the junior national team U23 in the international match against Denmark. In the 0-0 draw, he formed the defender pair with Friedel Rausch goalkeeper Ewert. Four weeks later, on October 22, 1958, the Waldhof defender made his debut in the B national team. In Karlsruhe, the German B-Elf won the international match 1-0 against Austria. Günter Sawitzki (goalkeeper) and the two defenders Preis and Hans Barwenzik were guarantors for the stability of the defense. Again four weeks later, on November 19, he belonged to a North Baden contract player selection of the Oberliga Süd, which played a game in Sofia against the Bulgarian B national team. In the 4-2 victory of the guests from North Baden, he ran together with players like Wilhelm Dimmel , Heinz Ruppenstein , Karl-Heinz Kott and Bernhard Termath .

The sporting slump of Waldhof in the further course of the lap meant that Preis was no longer able to build on his starting performance and his selection bets ended early.
