“Jule” Barwenzik grew up as a footballer in the northern Ruhr area, with the Green-Whites of SpVgg Herten. Since the team from the Kampfbahn Katzenbusch belonged to the 2nd Division West from 1949 , the young defensive player gained experience in the second division in the West since the beginning of his career in the senior sector. In addition to his strength in duels, the young defender also excelled with a hard shot and strong nerves when converting penalties and direct free kicks. His performance in the second division led the defender to the ranks of the U23 junior national team for the first time on December 19, 1956 in the international match in Liège against Belgium . The DFB selection won the game with 3-2 goals and Barwenzik had formed the defender pair with Walter Zastrau . In the spring of 1957 he made his second appearance in the U23, again against Belgium, the game was played in Essen. In the second leg, the German team prevailed with 4-2 goals.

On December 30, 1956, the man from Herten, together with his club mate Günter Graetsch , was active in the representative game in Ludwigshafen for West Germany against Southwest Germany. Before the second international junior game, he had taken part in a DFB training course from February 18 to March 2, 1957, under the direction of national coach Sepp Herberger in Duisburg with his fellow defenders Karl Schmidt, Herbert Erhardt , Willi Gerdau , Walter Zastrau and Wilhelm Dimmel . On October 22, 1958, he formed the German defensive with goalkeeper Günter Sawitzki , defender Albert Preis and the runner row with Heinz Ruppenstein , Alfred Pyka and Helmut Benthaus in the 1-0 success in the B international match against Austria in the Karlsruhe Wildpark Stadium . Four days later, on October 26th, he was a substitute for the international A match against France in Paris. After the round 1959/60 Barwenzik joined after a total of 170 second division appearances with 23 goals for Herten for the 1960/61 season Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in the football Oberliga West.

Oberhausen, 1960 to 1966

At the side of his teammates Helmut Traska , Jürgen Sundermann , Karlheinz Feldkamp and Hans Siemensmeyer , the powerful defender completed 28 games with eight goals in the major league in 1960/61 for the team from the Niederrhein Stadium . The shamrocks, led by President Peter Maaßen , were tied with third place in the table, FC Schalke 04, in fourth place in the west. "Jule" Barwenzik celebrated his debut in the league on August 14, 1960 in a 2-2 home draw against Westfalia Herne. On March 19, 1961, he was also in front of 30,000 spectators at the Landwehr in the 0-0 draw against champions 1. FC Cologne in action. In his second year at RWO, 1961/62, Oberhausen was third behind 1. FC Köln and Schalke 04 with 40:20 points and 53:37 goals. Due to an injury, the defensive player had to pause in ten games and thus came to 20 missions, where he was again able to score eight hits. He was selected as a right defender in the "Revier Team of the Season". Club mate Hans Siemensmeyer as a left half-forward. In the last year of the old first-class football league, 1962/63, Barwenzik started with Oberhausen with a 3-1 win against 1. FC Köln, to which he also contributed a goal, followed by a 1-0 away win Hamborn 07 with a converted penalty in the 86th minute by the penalty specialist and on the third matchday a 2-1 home win against Aachen and RWO had 6-0 points and hoped to be able to realistically play for the nomination places for the new Bundesliga . After the preliminary round, the goal was also achievable in sixth place with 16:14 points. At the end of the round, however, with 29:31 points, it was only enough for 10th place and the acceptance into the Bundesliga was wasted. The final triangle this season were Helmut Traska, Barwenzik (29-9) and Friedhelm Kobluhn .

He then undertook in the three rounds 1963/64 to 1965/66 in vain the attempt to qualify with Oberhausen in the Football Regionalliga West for the promotion round to the Bundesliga. In the first year, RWO took seventh place and in the next two years came fourth. With the game on May 29, 1966 at Hamborn 07, "Jule" Barwenzik said goodbye to a total of 69 regional league games with 14 goals from higher-class football and ended his playing career at RW Oberhausen. In the 83rd minute he scored the winning goal to make it 2-1 against Hamborner keeper Werner Scholz .
