Albert Spear Hitchcock
Albert Spear Hitchcock (born September 4, 1865 in Owosso , Michigan , † December 16, 1935 on the Atlantic Ocean ) was an American botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Hitchc. "
Life
Albert Spear Hitchcock graduated from Iowa State College , where he received three degrees. He then spent ten years as a professor of botany at the Kansas State Agricultural College . From 1901 to 1935 he was an agrostologist (grass scientist) of the United States National Herbarium . In 1925 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . On the way back from a research trip to various European herbariums , he died in 1935 on the Atlantic Ocean on board the City of Norfolk .
Honors
The plant genus Hitchcockella A. Camus from the sweet grass family (Poaceae) was named after him.
