Natalio Alberto Nisman (born December 5, 1963 in Buenos Aires , Argentina , † January 18, 2015 there ) was an Argentine lawyer and special prosecutor for the investigation into the bombing of the AMIA building in 1994.

Life

Alberto Nisman comes from a middle-class Jewish family in Buenos Aires . After studying in his hometown, he began his professional career as a prosecutor in Morón in the province of Buenos Aires . He was married to the judge Sandra Arroyo Salgado, with whom he had two daughters.

In 2005 he took over the investigation as a public prosecutor to investigate a bomb attack on the Amia Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, in which 85 people were killed and 300 injured in July 1994. He brought charges against several representatives of the Iranian government in 2013 . In his indictment from 2015 he accused the then Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and other high-ranking officials of trying to prevent the investigation of the terrorist attack and at the same time wanting to grant the alleged Iranian masterminds impunity; also because the president spoke out in favor of a truth commission with Iranian participation to clarify the bomb attack .

Death and subsequent development

A few hours before his hearing before the Argentine National Congress , Nisman was found shot dead in his apartment on the evening of January 18, 2015. For a long time it was unclear whether he was murdered or whether he died by suicide . However, no traces of smoke were found on his hands during the investigation . He had also mentioned several threats received. He was buried in a Jewish cemetery near Buenos Aires. President Kirchner, who was accused by Nisman of covering up responsibility for the attack, initially spoke of a suicide; She later shifted the responsibility to a dismissed intelligence worker who worked closely with Nisman and instrumentalized him. Kirchner announced the termination of the service. Kirchner's critics called this version an excuse.

At the end of 2017, a federal judge ruled that Nisman's death could not have been a suicide. An arrest warrant against Cristina Fernández de Kirchner for allegedly covering up the attack was issued in December 2017, which has not yet been carried out due to her immunity as a senator. You and Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman remain charged with attempting to prevent the persecution of the Iranian masterminds. The background should have been lucrative oil deals with Iran, which should not be disturbed by the investigation.
