Albin Małysiak CM (born June 12, 1917 in Kocoń , † July 16, 2011 in Cracow ) was a Polish religious and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Cracow .

Life

Albin Małysiak joined the Order of the Lazarists on April 12, 1936 and received his training in Poland and Lithuania . After completing his studies at the Instytut Teologiczny Księży Misjonarzy in Cracow, he made his profession on April 12, 1936 . During the Second World War he worked in the institute and the provincial administration. Because of the German occupation he was ordained a priest on May 1, 1941 by the Krakow Auxiliary Bishop Stanisław Rospond and was active in pastoral care in Krakow, among other places. In 1943/44 he and Sister Bronisława Wilemska DC, superior of the Helclów House, gave asylum to fellow Jewish citizens and got them forged identity cards and birth certificates. After the war he was a pastor in Tarnow. In 1950 he earned a master's degree in theology from the Jagiellonian University and in 1952 he was in dogmatic theology to a doctor of theology doctorate . In 1954 he became director of the Siemaszko Institute in Cracow and at the same time lecturer in dogmatics at the ITKM in Cracow, the Vincentine Institute for Theology. In 1959 he took over the parish of Lourdes Church in Krakow, an important academic center.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 14, 1970 titular bishop of Beatia and auxiliary bishop in Krakow. The Archbishop of Cracow , Karol Józef Wojtyla , gave him episcopal ordination on April 5th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Bronisław Dąbrowski FDP , auxiliary bishop in Warsaw , and Julian Groblicki , auxiliary bishop in Krakow. He was involved in many committees of the episcopate of Poland, including the religious orders.

On February 27, 1993 Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. From 1997 until his death he was Episcopus Nestor (oldest member) of the Polish Bishops' Conference.

Honors

For his courage and his commitment in the Second World War, he was honored in 1993 by the State of Israel as Righteous Among the Nations . On October 10th, 2007 he was honored for his work by the President of the Republic of Poland with the Grand Cross of the Order Polonia Restituta .
