Albuca zebrina is a plant of the genus Albuca in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet zebrina comes from Latin , means 'striped' and refers to the cross-banded leaf bases of the species.

description

Albuca zebrina is a dwarf, single growing geophyte . Its spherical onions are up to 2 centimeters in diameter and just as high. The onion scales are fleshy. The outer scales are dry and dark. The single, upright foliage leaf appears with the flowers. Its linear leaf blade is up to 14 centimeters long. The sheaths at the base have dark transverse ligaments.

The paniculate, up to ten-flowered inflorescence reaches a length of up to 20 centimeters. The linear-egg-shaped, pointed bracts are 1 centimeter long. The inflorescence has a length of 1 centimeter. Their elliptical tepals are 10 millimeters long. The subtle stamens are tiny rough. The ovary is elongated and 4 millimeters long. The flowering time is spring.

Nothing is known about the fruits and seeds .

Systematics and distribution

Albuca zebrina is widespread in the South African province of Northern Cape in the Succulent Karoo .

The first description by John Gilbert Baker was published in 1903.

Synonyms are Ornithogalum zebrinum (Baker) Oberm. (1978) and Coilonox zebrinum (Baker) Speta (2001) .
