Aldo Pedro Poy (born September 14, 1945 in Rosario ) is a former Argentine football player. Active at club level exclusively for his home club Rosario Central and also quite successful with two championship titles, he also took part in the 1974 World Cup in Germany with the national team of his home country .

Career

Club career

Aldo Poy, born in Rosario (Santa Fe) in 1945 , the third largest city in Argentina after Buenos Aires and Córdoba , played for the Rosario Central club throughout his football career . He was accepted into the professional team in 1965 and played there until 1974 in 292 league games, where he scored 61 goals.

The midfielder was part of the Rosario Central team that won the first ever Argentine championship for Rosario Central in 1971 under coach Ángel Labruna , who once played the legendary Maquina of River Plate . In the Torneo Nacional of the Primera División 1971 they prevailed 2-1 in the final against CA San Lorenzo de Almagro , after local rivals CA Newell's Old Boys had been defeated 1-0 in the semifinals with a goal from Aldo Poy. This goal, a diving header, became known as La Palomita in Argentina and is Aldo Poy's trademark to this day. As a result, you were eligible to start for the Copa Libertadores 1972 , but where that came from in the preliminary round, when you only came second in Group 1 behind Independiente Avellaneda and in front of the two Colombian representatives Independiente Santa Fe and Atlético Nacional , but only the group first continued came. In the championship game against Newell's Old Boys, he was seriously injured, had an operation and then returned to professional football. A little later, however, the injury broke out again, Poy had to undergo another operation and subsequently decided to end his football career.

National team

In 1973 and 1974, Aldo Poy made two international matches for the Argentine national soccer team . However, he did not succeed in scoring. He was appointed to the South American squad for the 1974 World Cup in Germany by national coach Vladislao Cap . In the tournament, however, Poy was not used. The Argentine team, meanwhile, reached the second group stage, but then retired there last behind the Netherlands , Brazil and the GDR without a win.
