The 2010 Atlantic crossing kayak

Aleksander Doba (born September 9, 1946 in Swarzędz ) is a Polish kayak driver who crossed the Atlantic Ocean three times in a kayak.

Live and act

Aleksander Doba was active in several sporting disciplines, including cycling, hiking, mountain hiking, sailing, gliding, and skydiving. At the age of 34, he embarked on his first 2-week kayak trip on the Drage in Poland .

In 2010 it started in Dakar in Senegal and reached Acaráu in Brazil after 98 days and 2,912 nautical miles . If he had chosen the shortest route here, he chose the longest route from Lisbon to Florida for his second crossing . It started in October 2013 and reached Florida after 167 days in April 2014, single-handedly without any outside support.

His third Atlantic crossing was planned for 2016. He started in New York, but had to give up four days later off Sandy Hook Island because his kayak was damaged by heavy waves. On May 16, 2017, it set off again, this time in Barnegat Bay ( New Jersey ) and 111 days later, after 6,680 km, it reached Le Conquet in Brittany .

His Atlantic crossings in 2010 and 2013/14 were the longest open water kayak trips that have ever taken place. In 2014 he was named "Adventurer of the Year" by National Geographic .
