Alex Joseph Vadakumthala (born June 14, 1959 in Maradu-Panangad , Kerala , India ) is Bishop of Kannur .

Life

Alex Joseph Vadakumthala received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Verapoly on December 19, 1984 .

From 1988 to 1992 he studied canon law at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome and was awarded a Dr. jur. can. PhD . From 1993 to 1999 he was a member of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care in Health Services . He then served as General Secretary of the Health Commission of the Indian Bishops' Conference for ten years . In 2009 he became Vice Chancellor and 2011 Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Verapoly. From 2009 to 2013 he was President of the Canon Law Society of India .

On February 1, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Kannur. He was ordained bishop by the Apostolic Nuncio in India, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio , on March 23 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Verapoly , Francis Kallarakal , and the Bishop of Calicut , Varghese Chakkalakal .
