Alexander David Turner (born January 6, 1986 in Sheffield ) is a British rock musician. He is frontman and co-founder of the British indie - rock band Arctic Monkeys . There he plays the lead guitar and sings. He plays with a Fender Stratocaster in Olympic White or Black and recently also with a black Fender Bronco (production officially discontinued in 1981) as well as with a Fender Jazzmaster and a Fender Mustang in Black. He also plays on a 1967 Vox Starstream XII.

Alex Turner, who grew up in Sheffield as the son of a German teacher and a music teacher, and his band became known for the rapid distribution of some of their songs on the Internet. The group became one of the most talked about newcomer in 2005 and ended before the release of their first album Whatever People Say I Am , with their first two singles I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor and When the Sun Goes Down two Number one hits in the UK . The Arctic Monkeys were formed in 2002 after Turner met the later drummer Matt Helders at Stocksbridge High School and they decided to form a band with the other two band members Jamie Cook and Nick O'Malley . Almost all band members had only received the corresponding instruments for Christmas a year earlier .

Turner's trademarks are his haunting Yorkshire accent with which he performs his songs and - at the beginning of his career - the habit of always playing his guitar at chest height. In December 2005 he was named the “coolest man on the planet” by the English music magazine New Musical Express . Despite the success of his band, he appears to the outside world to be rather shy, media-shy and reserved. Turner is considered one of the best young songwriter of the indie - scene , but also frequently been criticized for his rare public appearances. With his musician colleague and friend Miles Kane (front man of The Little Flames and then The Rascals ) he founded the duo The Last Shadow Puppets in 2007 . In April 2008 her first album The Age of the Understatement was released .

His first solo release was the soundtrack to the movie Submarine in 2011.
