Alexa Meade (* 1986 in Washington, DC ) is an American artist known for her illusionistic painting .

She uses the trompe-l'œil , which creates a three-dimensionality from the two-dimensional representation . With the peculiarity that she tries to turn her predominantly lively motifs and consequently plastic effects into their opposite. Your goal is to make the three-dimensional, like a normal picture, appear two-dimensional. The results are moving, interactive paintings that irritate the eye when processing the spatial effect .

Childhood, youth and education

Alexa Meade was born in Washington, DC in 1986. In 2009 she graduated from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie , New York with a BA in Political Science . Meade never went to art school, she brought himself to paint self-taught at. In an interview, she stated that she did not have to think about painting like painting on canvas because she had no practice in it. She saw painting as something that could be used anywhere. In 2009 she decided to professionalize her work.

Meade uses acrylic paint on the surfaces of people and the objects around them in a style that mimics the brushwork on a traditional painting. The dimensionality may be captured from several angles, but when viewed it looks like a surface, comparable to looking through the lens of a camera, without any visual effects . Curator Christian Furr of the Saatchi Gallery describes her work as "an advance on the actual trompe l'oeil."

A director of the National Portrait Gallery said he was impressed. He thought he knew what he was seeing. Now he knows that he does not know. What remains are portraits in triplicate. "A photo of one person painting another and hiding the person somewhere below."

Meade portrayed in collaboration with artists such as three-time Grammy Award winner Gotye .

Meade has exhibited her work in the Saatchi Gallery in London, the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, the Ivo Kamm Gallery in Zurich , the Gallery for Contemporary Photography in Munich and the Postmasters Gallery in New York.

The European Director of the TED Conference, Bruno Giussani, invited Alexa Meade to TEDGlobal 2013 in Edinburgh , Scotland.
