Maziyar "Maz" Jobrani (born February 26, 1972 in Tehran , Iran ) is an American comedian and actor .

Life

When the Islamic Revolution broke out in Iran in 1979, Jobrani's family emigrated to California . Jobrani grew up in Tiburon in the San Francisco Bay . He attended Redwood High School in Larkspur and studied political science and Italian at the University of California, Berkeley . He broke off a doctorate at the University of California, Los Angeles in favor of his stage career.

Jobrani performed in several clubs, including the prestigious The Comedy Store , before being booked to appear on several television shows like The Colbert Report and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson . Thematically, he focused on topics such as racism , Islamophobia and cultural peculiarities of Islam in the United States and the Middle East . Together with comedians Ahmed Ahmed, Aron Kader and Dean Obeidallah, he founded the comedy tour Axis of Evil (German: " Axis of Evil ").

As an actor, he has been able to establish himself as a supporting actor for Muslim characters in television series and films since 2000, particularly through typecasting . He has appeared in Malcolm in the Middle , Law & Order and True Blood, among others. In the cinema he was seen sporadically in small roles in films like 30 über Nacht and Die Dolmetscherin .

Jobrani has been married to a lawyer of Indian descent since 2006. The couple have two children, a son and a daughter, and live in California.
