Alexander Becker

Alexander Becker (born January 13, 1857 in Veert , Geldern district ; † December 26, 1918 in Berlin ) was a Prussian medical officer ( senior medical officer ) in German East Africa and a secret medical councilor in the Reich Colonial Office .

Live and act

Alexander Becker studied medicine at the Kaiser Wilhelms Academy for Military Medical Education (KWA) in Berlin from October 21, 1876 to September 30, 1880, received his doctorate on December 14, 1880 and promoted to assistant doctor on August 23, 1881 .

On October 8, 1889, with the prospect of future reinstatement, he resigned from the Prussian army and joined the Wissmann troop , a group of mercenaries of the then Reich Commissioner Hermann von Wissmann in German East Africa. In March / April 1891 the Wissmannsche Schutztruppe was transferred to the Imperial Schutztruppe for German East Africa and Becker was put back into Prussian military service. On July 22, 1900, Becker resigned from active service with the rank of first class medical officer and in the position of chief physician and consultant at the imperial government in Dar es Salaam and settled in Friedenau . He published his own book in 1911 about his time in the Schutztruppe and was co-author of a biography of Hermann von Wissmann.

With the outbreak of the First World War he entered the civil service in the position of a secret medical councilor as head of military and civil medical affairs in the Reich Colonial Office and held this position until his death. He died without a previous illness as a result of a heart attack on the night of Christmas Day 1918.

Alexander Becker was awarded the Iron Cross Knight 2nd Class and the Red Eagle Order 4th Class with Swords.
