Alexander Christiani (diplomat)

Alexander Christiani (born May 31, 1940 Vienna ) is a former Austrian ambassador .

Life

Alexander Christiani attended the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna from 1964 to 1966 . From 1967 to 1981 he was a member of the delegation to the UN General Assembly and from 1981 to 1986 head of the Austrian delegation in West Berlin and consul general. On July 27, 1986, he was appointed Ambassador to Pretoria , where he was accredited from September 17, 1986 to June 23, 1990. He headed the Near and Middle East Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1990 to 1996.

Later he was ambassador to The Hague and accredited to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). When Wolfgang Schüssel ruled with a coalition of the ÖVP and the Austrian Freedom Party , protests were made. Alexander Christiani was struck off a guest list for an ambassador's dinner on May 10, 2000 with Beatrix (Netherlands) . From 2000 to 2005 he was Ambassador to the Court of St James’s .

Christiani is Vice President of the Austro-British Society , board member of the Austrian Society for Foreign Policy and the United Nations ., Knight of the Sovereign Knights of Malta Order and member of the Rotary Club Vienna.
