Alexander Friedrich (artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Robert Alexander Friedrich (born December 3, 1895 in Hamburg ; † December 28, 1968 there ) was a German etcher , wood cutter and mosaicist of early Expressionism .

Life

Friedrich was a student of Carl Otto Czeschka in Hamburg from 1913 to 1918 . He was a member of the expressionist artist group “Forces” in Hamburg, a local group of the November group (together with Kinner von Dresler , Paul Adolf Seehaus , Andreas Luksch and Peter Luksch). One of his artist friends was Johannes Wüsten , who portrayed him and dedicated his story Ywon - a story of double life to him.

His pictorial inventions, which are strongly committed to Expressionism, range between realistic portrayals of nature and bizarre fantasy. His graphic portfolios (including Faust II , Music , Incarnations , In aspectu orbis , The Stone and Heavy Industry ) are considered rare due to the low number of copies. In etching he tended to experimentally expand technical limits. He dealt with Hercules Pieterszoon Seghers and the history of gravure printing.

During the Second World War, Friedrich worked with his friend, the Hamburg architect Konstanty Gutschow .

Some of his works are in the Städtisches Museum Flensburg.
