Alexander Criticus

Alexander Kritos (* 1965 in Munich ) is a German economist . He is research director of the cross-sectional group “Entrepreneurship” at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) in Berlin . There he previously headed the Innovation, Industry, Services department and was Vice President of DIW Berlin between 2010 and 2011. Kritos holds a professorship for industrial and institutional economics at the University of Potsdam and is a research fellow at the Institute for the Future of Work (IZA).

Life

Alexander Critique's father is Greek, his mother German. From 1984 to 1989 he studied economics and political science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , graduating with a degree in economics (1989). From 1990 to 1993 he completed a postgraduate course at the Free University of Berlin as a scholarship holder at the Graduate College for Applied Microeconomics; meanwhile he worked as a freelancer for DIW (1991 to 1992). In 1993, Kritos became a research associate with Friedel Bolle at the chair for microeconomics at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) . In 1996 he received his doctorate from the Humboldt University in Berlin and his dissertation on “Two Incentive Compatible Mechanisms to Induce Cooperation: Theory and Experimental Evidence” was awarded “ summa cum laude ”. In 1998 he became a research assistant at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). During various research stays, including in Bangladesh , Warsaw and Paris , he was a Research Fellow of the German Marshall Fund in Washington (1999) and an EU-TMR Research Fellow at the Athens University of Economics, Athens (2000). Criticos completed his habilitation in 2003 at the European University Viadrina and received his venia legendi for economics.

From 2004 to 2015 he was a founding member and member of the supervisory board of the German Microfinance Institute (DMI), Berlin and at the same time founded the Society for Labor Market Activation (GfA) in Berlin. From 2004 to 2007 he was also a private lecturer at the European University Viadrina. From 2007 to 2009 he was professor of economics at the Private Hanseatic University Rostock (PHU); in the same year he turned down an offer at Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen as professor for entrepreneurial finance. A year later Kritos accepted an offer from the German Institute for Economic Research after he had decided against being offered the chair for SME research at the University of Cologne in connection with the management of the Institute for SME Research (IfM) Bonn.

From 2008 to 2011, Alexander kritos headed the Innovation, Industry, Services department at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW). From 2010 to 2011 he was also Vice President of the institute. Since 2011 he has been research director of the cross-sectional group “Entrepreneurship” at DIW Berlin. In addition, he is a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Future of Work (IZA), Bonn and at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), Nuremberg . Kritos is also a member of the social science and economic policy committee of the Verein für Socialpolitik .

research

Alexander Kritos' research focuses on entrepreneurship research, microfinance and experimental economic research. Numerous, especially recent, works deal primarily with questions of entrepreneurial start-ups and with entrepreneurs. He also deals with empirical industrial economics , institutional economics and research questions in the field of business psychology . Criticos has been organizing lectures and seminars in academic teaching since 1993.

Kritos works as a reviewer for renowned specialist journals and publishes or is a member of the editorial boards of the DIW weekly report, Small Business Economics, the Journal of Economic Psychology and the quarterly economic research magazine (DIW).

Since 2001, Kritos has been an economic policy advisor for the Federal Ministry of Economics , the Federal Ministry of Labor , the Federal Employment Agency and various state ministries.

His research has been published in Economics Letters, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Economic Psychology, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Kyklos, Small Business Economics, Southern Economic Journal and Theory and Decision, among others.
