Alexander Leibkind

Alexander Leibkind (born October 19, 1952 in Munich , † May 18, 2006 in New York City ) was a German athlete, sports manager and managing director.

biography

Leibkind initially studied civil engineering and architecture in Darmstadt and Frankfurt, later he studied sports science (certified sports teacher) at the Cologne Sports University.

He was the German lightweight judo champion in 1974 , a member of the German national judo team from 1971 to 1979 and was part of the German Olympic team in Montreal in 1976. After completing his sports studies, he worked for a sports agency in Cologne and looked after top athletes such as Steffi Graf , Ulrike Meyfarth and Michael Groß . In the mid-1980s he founded his own agency and managed windsurfing legend Robby Naish , among others . In the 1990s he organized the indoor free climbing world championships in Frankfurt am Main.

From 1980 to 1981 Leibkind was cornerback of the American football team Cologne Crocodiles and in 1981 took part in the first international matches of a German national football team in Castel Giorgio, Italy, and in Frankfurt. In 1993 he became the manager of the German American Football Bundesliga and in 1995 General Manager of the Rhein Fire American football team in Düsseldorf, with whom he won the World Bowl in 1998 and 2000 . He was one of the initiators of the founding of the Cologne Centurions , which in 2004 had their first season in the NFL Europe .

In 2001 Leibkind was named managing director of Olympia Rhein-Ruhr GmbH , which organized the city of Düsseldorf's application for the 2012 Olympic Games. Since 2004 he has been managing director of the Düsseldorf city marketing company Düsseldorf Marketing & Tourismus GmbH (DMT). Leibkind is among other things the initiator and source of ideas for the Ski World Cup on the Rhine and in 2006 also brought the DTM season opening event to Düsseldorf's Königsallee . It was also his merit in 2005 to bring a stage of the Eneco Tour to Düsseldorf and the starting stage of the Germany Tour 2006 .

Alexander Leibkind suffered a heart attack while on business in New York in early May 2006 and died of cardiovascular failure.
