Alexander Daniel Alan Macmillan, 2nd Earl of Stockton (born October 10, 1943 in Oswestry , Shropshire ) is a British politician and member of the Conservative Party .

Life and political career

He is the eldest son of Maurice Victor Macmillan, Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden from his marriage to the Hon. Katherine Ormsby-Gore, daughter of William Ormsby-Gore, 4th Baron Harlech .

He attended Eton College and studied at the University of Paris and the University of Strathclyde . In the 1980s he was a board member of Macmillan Publishers Ltd. , a publishing house that was owned by the Macmillan family for a long time until the family gradually sold it to the German publishing group Georg von Holtzbrinck between 1995 and 1999 .

When his grandfather Harold Macmillan, 1st Earl of Stockton , died in 1986, he inherited his title of nobility, Earl of Stockton , as his father had died in 1984. A seat in the House of Lords was associated with the title . With the House of Lords Act 1999 he lost his hereditary seat in parliament. Several attempts to win one of the seats reserved for hereditary peers in by-elections were unsuccessful. From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the European People's Party for the constituency of South West England in the European Parliament .

In May 2011, Macmillan was a member of the District Councils of South Bucks selected.

Marriages and offspring

His first marriage was in 1970 with Helene Birgette Hamilton. The marriage was divorced in 1991. From this marriage there were three children:

  • Daniel Maurice Alan Macmillan, Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden (* 1974)
  • Lady Rebecca Elizabeth Macmillan (* 1980)
  • Lady Louisa Alexandra Macmillan (* 1982)

In his second marriage, he married Miranda Quarry on December 23, 1995. She was previously married to Peter Sellers (1925–1980) and Sir Nicholas Nuttall, 3rd Baronet (1933–2007).
