Alexander Martin (mathematician)

Alexander Martin (* 1965 ) is a German mathematician .

Life

After studying business mathematics at the University of Augsburg , which he graduated in 1988, Martin received his doctorate (1992) and habilitation (1998) in mathematics at the Technical University of Berlin .

During this time he completed several stays abroad, including a. at Rice University , Houston and the University of Minnesota (both in the USA ) and at the University of São Paulo .

From 2000 to 2010 he was a professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt , where he held the office of vice president from 2008 to 2010. He then accepted a position at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg , where he is professor at the Chair of Business Mathematics . In 2015 he also took over the management of the “Analytics” department in the Supply Chain Services research area of ​​the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS. He has been a member of the Fraunhofer IIS management team since November 1, 2019.

In addition, Martin heads the ADA Center, a center for analytics, data and applications, in which Fraunhofer IIS cooperates with the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich and other research partners.

Services

In over 110 articles, Martin deals mainly with mathematical methods of optimization and simulation in relation to economic issues. In addition to his work as an editor for several international journals, he was managing editor for the journal “Mathematical Methods of Operations Research” and has been a BMBF expert reviewer for mathematics since 2007. He was and is a speaker at various SFB initiatives (including SFB 666 and 805 as well as TRR 154 ), the Excellence Graduate School “Computational Engineering” and involved in several joint projects of the BMBF and BMWi.

Awards

Martin was awarded third place in the "Hessian Cooperation Prize 2007" for innovative and successful cooperation between Hessian companies and universities. For his contribution “ On clearing coupled day-ahead electricity markets ”, which he wrote together with J. Müller and S. Pokutta, he received the “Best Paper Award” at the Energy Finance 2010 conference.
