Alexander Schnütgen (Librarian)

Alexander Schnütgen (born July 1, 1883 in Steele , † March 12, 1955 in Bonn ) was a German librarian and church historian.

Life

Schnütgen was a son of the secret medical councilor Viktor Schnütgen. The cathedral capitular and honorary citizen of Cologne Alexander Schnütgen was his godfather. From 1902 he studied theology in Freiburg and Bonn as well as history, philosophy and German literature in Berlin, Münster and Strasbourg. After graduating as Dr. phil. in Strasbourg in 1907 and the scientific state examination in 1908, he embarked on the Prussian library career and, after completing his internship at the Bonn University Library, became an assistant there in 1910. After studying in Rome in 1911/12, Schnütgen became assistant librarian in 1914, librarian at the Royal Library in Berlin in 1916 , and at the University Library in Bonn in 1921. From 1927 to 1944 he was department director and head of the acquisitions department of what was now the Prussian State Library in Berlin.

Since 1921 Schnütgen was a member and from 1928 chairman of the commission for the Prussian library diploma examination. In 1930 he became department chairman of the state examination board for library affairs (academic library). From 1923 to 1925 he was a member of the Prussian advisory council for library matters.

Schütgen was primarily concerned with the recent church history of the Rhineland. In 1926 he became chairman of the Historical Association for the Lower Rhine for ten years, of which he was a member of the board for a total of 30 years. Schnütgen was a member of the advisory board of the Görres Society and a member of the Society for Rhenish History .

He was a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Ripuaria Freiburg im Breisgau in the CV .
