Alexander Watson (historian)

Alexander James Watson (born July 12, 1979 ) is a British military historian .

Life

Watson studied history at Balliol College of Oxford University (BA 2000 and Ph.D. 2004). His thesis with Niall Ferguson was on The Chances of Survival. Personal Risk Assessment and Attitudes to Death among German and British soldiers in the Great War, 1914-1918 . In 2005 he became a Research Fellow at Clare College , Cambridge. From 2008 to 2011 he was a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cambridge and from 2011 to 2013 a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellow at the University of Warsaw (Poland). He is currently a lecturer in history at Goldsmiths, University of London .

His work Ring of Steel: Germany and Austria-Hungary at War, 1914–1918 , published in 2014 by Penguin Books , received relevant reviews in national newspapers (including the Guardian , the Financial Times , The Telegraph and the Wall Street Journal ), and multiple awards. Watson also published u. a. in the Journal of Modern History , in The English Historical Review , in the Journal of Contemporary History , in The Historical Journal , in Historical Research, and in War in History .
