Alexander von Baumgarten

Alexander von Baumgarten (Russian Александр Карлович Баумгартен, Alexander Karlowitsch Baumgarten, born March 19, 1815 , † May 4, 1883 in St. Petersburg ) was a Russian general of German Baltic descent.

Life

His father was the privy councilor Karl Wilhelm von Baumgarten (1768–1831), his mother Françoise von Roth.

He was enrolled in the imperial page corps and joined the famous Ismailovsky Life Guard regiment in 1833 . In October 1849 he was appointed commander of the Tobolsk Infantry Regiment during the war against the Hungarians. He took part in the battles on the right bank of the Váh and in the final battles for Komorn and Temesvar . In the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856 he fought with his regiment within the borders of Little Wallachia . At the beginning of the war, still with the rank of colonel, he was promoted to major general as commander of the Tobolsk Infantry Regiment on December 25, 1853 . For his service against 18,000 Turks in the Battle of Cetate , he was awarded the 3rd Class Order of St. George on April 20, 1854. On November 21, 1858 he was appointed head of the Nikolayev Academy of the General Staff for the next three years. On April 23, 1861 he was promoted to lieutenant general and appointed a member of the council of war, where he also served as a member of the main committee for military training. On April 17, 1874, he was promoted to General Adjutant and before his departure on April 16, 1878 to General of the Infantry. He was u. a. also president of the Russian Red Cross and died of a stroke in 1883. Baumgarten was buried in the St. Nicholas Cemetery near the Alexander Nevsky Monastery .
