Alexander (von) Sacher Masoch (born November 18, 1901 in Witkowitz , † August 17, 1972 in Vienna ) was an Austrian writer.

Life

Alexander Sacher-Masoch was a great-nephew of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch . Initially active as a chemist, he already emerged as a writer in the interwar period and was involved on the side of the political left. From 1938–40 he worked as a journalist in Belgrade as an émigré , from 1940–43 he lived, partly interned, on the island of Korčula . After the war the with was Franz Theodor Csokor befriended Sacher-Masoch one of the founders of the Austrian PEN Club and its first secretary general since 1945. 1946-47 acted Sacher-Masoch as the first editor of the Austrian Communist Party published cultural magazine Austrian diary (later Vienna Diary ). Sacher-Masoch's works often deal critically with the last decades of the Danube Monarchy and other contemporary historical topics. Sacher-Masoch was buried in the Grinzinger Friedhof (group 20, row 5, number 16) in an honorary grave . In 1994, his widow donated a literary prize in his memory, the Alexander Sacher Masoch Prize, named after him .
