Alexandre Antigna
Jean-Pierre-Alexandre Antigna (born March 7, 1817 in Orléans , † February 26, 1878 in Paris ) was a French painter .
Life
Alexandre Antigna received his first drawing lessons from the painter François Salmon (1781–1855), who urged him to continue his studies in Paris. In the fall of 1837 he enrolled at the prestigious Paris Art School , where he was a student of Sébastien Louis Guillaume Norblin de la Gourdaine (1796-1884) and Paul Delaroche (1797-1856).
Antigna exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1841 . At first he painted portraits and religious scenes. He later lived and worked on the Île Saint-Louis inland island in Paris - in his pictures he showed the suffering and stress of the people in the poor district. With the February Revolution of 1848 Antigna turned to the style of realism . On study trips to Brittany and Spain (1857), he always maintained his style and compassion for the poor. From 1860 he painted in the style of naturalism .
In 1861, Alexandre Antigna was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor . In the same year he married the painter Hélène-Marie Pettit, a granddaughter of the teacher and translator Ambroise Rendu (1778-1860). Their son André-Marc Antigna (1869–1941) also became a painter and miniaturist.
