Life

Alexandre Ledru-Rollin began his political ascent in the July monarchy . From 1841 he belonged as a radical republican and democrat to the French parliament and appeared as one of the sharpest critics of the government of Louis Philip . Previously, he had appeared in court as a defense lawyer for newspapers and publicly called for universal suffrage, which made him extremely popular. A rich marriage gave him a fortune with which he founded the newspaper La Réforme , which became the mouthpiece of the radical left.

After the February Revolution of 1848 he was French Minister of the Interior for two and a half months. In this function, he replaced the royalist provincial officials with republican-minded and organized the elections, he is therefore in France as the father of universal suffrage , which he personally enforced. After the moderate Republicans had prevailed, he barely made it to the executive committee, the new government. When he publicly supported the unpopular utopian socialist Louis Blanc , he finally lost popular support. In the election for President of the Republic, he ran for the far left and won only 371,000 votes.

As one of the most resolute public critics of the election winner Napoléon III. and especially his Prime Minister Odilon Barrot , Ledru-Rollin quickly regained popularity and was elected to the Legislative Assembly by five departments in 1849. In this function he called for the formation of a “National Convention” as a counter-assembly, whereupon he had to flee to Belgium and was sentenced to deportation in absentia. It was not until 1870 that he was allowed to return to France after spending 20 years in exile in Great Britain , but he no longer played a role politically.
