Alexandre José dos Reis Leitão is a Portuguese diplomat serving the European Union .

Career

After two years at the Centro de Estudos e Formação Autárquica , Leitão received a diploma in local public administration in 1987. From 1987 to 1992 he studied at the University of Coimbra .

After various posts, Leitão was from September 1992 to August 1999 geography teacher at the secondary schools D. Dinis ( Coimbra ), Trancoso ( Guarda ) and Ribeira de Pena ( Vila Real ). From 1994 to 1998 he was an elected member of the Coimbra City Council and in this role from 1994 to 1996 he was a member of the board of directors of ERSUC, a waste treatment company and from 1997 to 1999 a member of the council of the Centro tourist region .

From February 1998 to August 1999 Leitão was advisor to the State Secretary for Public Administration and Modernization. His duties also included representing the Prime Minister's Deputy Minister in the inter-ministerial network for the modernization of administration and in the inter-ministerial working group on East Timor . From October 1999 to December 2000 he was a member of the Cabinet for Special Cases - East Timor of the Portuguese Foreign Ministry . From January 2001 to February 2002 he was an advisor to the State Secretary for the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries , before returning to the Cabinet for Special Cases - East Timor from February to June 2002.

From July 2002 to August 2005 Leitão was Deputy Head of the Portuguese Embassy in Dakar ( Senegal ) and from September 2005 to September 2008 Head of European Parliament Affairs at the Representation of Portugal to the European Union. From July 2007 to December 2007 he was also chairman of the General Affairs working group during the Portuguese Presidency. In September 2008 Leitão became Portuguese Consul General in Benguela ( Angola ). He held the office until September 2012. This was followed by the chairmanship of the Consular Emergency Department in Lisbon until September 2014 .

Leitão studied at the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE) from 2013 to 2014. In 2014 he received a Master's degree in Political Science and International Relations from the Catholic University of Portugal . From September 2014 to December 2015 Leitão was CIO / Director for Cipher and IT in the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then he was diplomatic advisor in the Prime Minister's office until August 2016.

On September 27, 2016 Leitão presented his accreditation as Ambassador of the European Union in East Timor to President Taur Matan Ruak . He followed Sylvie Tabesse . Leitão was replaced by Andrew Jacobs on October 15, 2019 .
