Alexei Kondratjewitsch Savrasov
Alexei Savrasov ( Russian Алексей Кондратьевич Саврасов ; born May 12 . Jul / 24. May 1830 greg. In Moscow , † September 26 jul. / 8. October 1897 greg. ) Was a Russian landscape painter .
Born the son of a businessman, he began drawing and painting at an early age. As early as 1844 he was accepted as a student of Professor Rabus at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture , which he left as a graduate in 1850. He then began to pursue his special interest, landscape painting.
In 1852 he traveled to Ukraine . Two years later he went to Saint Petersburg at the invitation of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna , President of the Russian Academy of Art . In 1857 Savrasov took over the post of teacher at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture . His most famous students there were Isaak Levitan and Konstantin Alexejewitsch Korowin . The avant-garde painter Alexei Morgunov was his illegitimate son.
After his marriage to Sophia Carlovna Hertz, the sister of the art historian K. Hertz, many artists and collectors frequented his house, including Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov . During this time, he had a particularly close friendship with Vasily Grigoryevich Perow . In the 1860s he traveled to England to attend the World's Fair ; then he traveled to Switzerland .
In 1870 he became a member of the Peredwischniki movement and broke with the teaching methodology supported by the government. In addition, his works were shown at world exhibitions - in Vienna in 1873, Paris in 1878 and at the All-Russian Exhibition in Moscow in 1882.
In the following years he suffered personal and professional setbacks, so that he became an alcoholic. All attempts to help by relatives and friends were in vain. He spent the last years of his life in poverty and as a homeless person. He died in Moscow in 1897.
