Juan Alfonso Boekhoudt (born January 27, 1965 in Aruba ) is an Aruban politician of the Arubaanse People's Party (AVP). Between 2013 and 2016 he was Minister Plenipotentiary for Aruba . Since January 2017 he has been the governor of the country of Aruba in the Kingdom of the Netherlands .

biography

Boekhoudt was born on the Caribbean island of Aruba in 1965 . In the 1980s he went to the European Netherlands , where he first studied business administration at the University of Eindhoven . He then completed a degree in government accounting in Enschede . From 1991 he was on the staff of the Plenipotentiary Minister for Aruba in The Hague for three years , where he was responsible for educational and economic issues. During this time, he was particularly concerned with the acquisition of potential investors for Aruban economic projects. In 1994 Boekhoudt returned to the Caribbean, where he initially worked as finance director and later as managing director of an import / export company on the islands of Curaçao , Bonaire and San Andrés . After a brief interlude as managing director of a pharmaceutical company on Curaçao, between 2005 and 2013 he headed the Aruba Ports Authority, which is responsible for the administration of the island's two commercial ports. He was also chairman of the Aruban Red Cross for some time .

In 2013 Boekhoudt returned to politics and received the post of Minister Plenipotentiary for Aruba, representing the island's interests in the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom of the Netherlands . According to his own statements, the focus of his work included positioning Aruba as a "hub" between Europe and Latin America and supporting the Aruban government in implementing decisions that should lead to more environmental awareness and sustainability on the island. In 2016, the Dutch Interior Minister Ronald Plasterk proposed him as the successor to the outgoing Aruban Governor Fredis Refunjol . The proposal brought Plasterk into conflict with Aruba's Prime Minister Mike Eman , who had favored the appointment of then Treasury Secretary Angel Bermudez. After Boekhoudt accepted Plasterk's nomination, Eman's government officially withdrew his trust and forced him to step down as Minister Plenipotentiary on November 1, 2016. In a letter to Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte , Emans complained that only Aruba's Council of Ministers was actually allowed to nominate candidates for a new governor. After an agreement between Plasterk and Eman on October 18, 2016, Boekhoudt remained governor-designate. His first six-year term began as scheduled on January 1, 2017.
