Bornemann is still considered a cult player of the club at Holstein Kiel . 1956/57 he won the runner-up in the Oberliga Nord with Holstein; In the subsequent encounter for the German championship in 1957 at Kickers Offenbach , he scored two goals - it was no use: Holstein lost after extra time with 2: 3.

With 112 hits, "Atze" Bornemann ranks second among Holstein's record scorers to this day. 1959 Bornemann completed a selection game for the national team of the North German Football Association. In his final season at Holstein, he and his club only narrowly missed promotion to fourth place in the Bundesliga ( VfR Neumünster , who was ahead of Holstein, would have waived promotion). Bornemann then stormed for one season in the Regionalliga Nord for VfB Lübeck , where he scored 10 goals in 16 games.

"Atze" Bornemann acted as trainer for clubs in Kiel and the surrounding area such as Borussia Kiel and Eckernförder SV .
