Alfred Bradley Fitt (born April 12, 1923 in Highland Park , † July 7, 1992 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer. He served as General Counsel of the Army from 1964 to 1967 , on the United States Department of Defense staff as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Reserve Affairs from 1967 to 1969, and as General Counsel of the Congressional Budget Office from 1975 to 1992 .

Origin and education

Alfred B. Fitt was on April 12, 1923 Highland Park in Lake County in the US state of Illinois born. He was educated at Yale University and received a BA in 1946 . He then attended the University of Michigan Law School and received a Bachelor of Laws in 1948 and then his bar license.

Career

In 1948, Fitt joined the law firm Lewis & Watkins in Detroit and, in 1952, became a partner in the law firm. In 1954, he left Lewis & Watkins to legal counsel G. Mennen Williams , the Governor of the State of Michigan to become. In 1960 he moved to Washington, DC , to become Associate Counsel on the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Administrative Oversight and Courts. In 1961 he became chief attorney for the Special Committee on Federal Aviation Administration Proceedings.

Later in 1961, Fitt joined the United States Department of the Army as Deputy Secretary of the Army (Manpower and Reserve Affairs). From 1963 to 1964 he was Assistant Secretary of State to the Secretary of Defense for Civil Rights. From 1964 to 1967 he was General Counsel of the Army. From October 9, 1967 to February 20, 1969, he was Assistant Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Reserve Affairs.

Fitt retired from government in 1969 to serve as special assistant for community and alumni affairs to Yale President Kingman Brewster Jr.

In 1975, Fitt left Yale to become General Counsel of the Congressional Budget Office , a position he held until his death in 1992. He died of cancer at the age of 69, according to the family.

Private

Fitt was married twice. About his second marriage from 1978 to Lois Dickson Rice (1933-2017), who was previously married to Emmett J. Rice , Fitt was the stepfather of the future US government official Susan E. Rice .
