Alfred Chavannes

Alfred Chavannes (born January 2, 1836 in La Sarraz , Canton of Vaud ; † January 10, 1894 in Aigle , Canton of Vaud) was a Swiss landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Chavannes first studied architecture in Lausanne . Then he turned to painting, which he studied with Jean Bryner (1816–1909) and Alexandre Calame in Geneva . He then went to Düsseldorf , where he received private lessons from Oswald Achenbach from 1860 to 1874 and worked in his studio . From 1861 to 1875 Chavannes was a member of the Malkasten artists' association . He returned to Lausanne in the mid-1870s. In the 1860s and 1870s, Chavannes' works were exhibited in Düsseldorf and Berlin .
