Alfred Doppler

Alfred Doppler (born June 12, 1921 in Linz ) is an Austrian literary scholar and professor emeritus for Austrian literature and general literary studies at the University of Innsbruck .

Life

After attending the academic grammar school in Linz , Doppler studied German and history at the University of Graz from 1945 . In 1948 he passed the teaching examination for German and history there, in 1949 he received his doctorate in Graz under Hugo Kleinmayr on variant criticism of Edward Samhaber's poetry . From 1948 to 1968 he worked as a teacher at the Pestalozzi-Realgymnasium and the Academic Gymnasium in Graz , from 1956 to 1964 he also held a teaching position at the University of Graz.

In 1964 Doppler received his habilitation in Graz with The Abyss. Studies on the history of the meaning of a motif and worked from 1964 to 1968 as a private lecturer at the University of Graz. From 1968 to 1970 he went to the University of Munich. In 1970 he took up an extraordinary professorship for modern German language and literature at the University of Graz, until he accepted a professorship for Austrian literature and general literary studies at the University of Innsbruck in 1971 , which he held until his retirement in 1991.

Doppler's research focus is the German and Austrian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, in particular Schiller , Hölderlin , Grillparzer , Stifter , Hofmannsthal , Schnitzler , Rilke , Trakl and Horvath .
