Charles A. Lockwood
Charles A. Lockwood (born May 6, 1890 in Midland, Virginia , † June 6, 1967 in San Bruno , California ) was a Vice Admiral in the United States Navy . He was in command of the Submarine Pacific Fleet during World War II .
biography
Lockwood graduated from the United States Naval Academy around 1912. He then served on various battleships until 1914 .
In 1914 he had his first mission on a submarine . He has since served on various submarines and, with one short exception, was permanently associated with the submarine navy.
In June 1939 he became chief of staff at the commandant submarine forces of the US Navy. From February 1941 he was a naval attaché at the US Embassy in London. He was promoted to Rear Admiral ( Rear Admiral promoted) and took over in 1942 in Perth , Western Australia in command of the submarine fleet Southwest Pacific and the local Allied naval forces.
In February 1943, after the death of Rear Admiral Robert Henry English, Lockwood was appointed as his successor as Commander of the Submarines of the US Pacific Fleet and in October 1943 was promoted to Vice Admiral. The popular admiral was nicknamed "Uncle Charlie". In his time, several hundred submarines were put into service in his fleet and were able to record considerable successes against the Japanese Navy.
After the war, Lockwood served as the U.S. Marine Inspector General until his retirement in June 1947. He now lived in Los Gatos , California. He has written several best-selling books about the Navy and was a consultant in the film Operation Pacific ( Operation Pacific ) with John Wayne .
Lockwood was married.
He was buried in 1967 on Yerba Buena Island in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno near San Francisco , next to his wife and Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz , Admiral Raymond A. Spruance and Admiral Richmond K. Turner .
