Richmond Kelly Turner (born May 27, 1885 in Portland , Oregon , USA ; † February 12, 1961 in Monterey , California ) was an admiral in the US Navy .

Military career

In June 1908 Turner graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis , which he had attended since 1904. He then served on various ships for the next four years. Turner received his first command temporarily in 1913 as Lieutenant Junior Grade over the destroyer USS Stewart . After a brief period of service on the gunboat Marietta , he was assigned to the battleships USS Pennsylvania , USS Michigan and USS Mississippi from 1916 to 1919 . Between 1919 and 1922 Turner was an arms officer at the US Navy arms factory in Washington, DC From 1927, the year in which he received flight lessons, his service assignments were closely linked to aviation. He served as the commander of the Jason aircraft tender and as first officer on the USS Saratoga in the 1930s . As a captain , Turner graduated from Naval War College in 1935 and then served in its leadership until 1938. His next command was the heavy cruiser USS Astoria , with which he went on a diplomatic mission to Japan in 1939 .

In 1941 Turner was promoted to Rear Admiral and from December of the same year staff assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations . In June 1942 he was given command of the amphibious forces of the South Pacific Fleet. In this position Turner planned many amphibious missions against enemy positions in the Pacific War . He was also provided with the rank of admiral as commander in chief of the amphibious landing fleet for Operation Downfall , the landing on the main Japanese islands.

After the end of World War II , Turner served in the naval administration and was the US Navy Envoy to the United Nations . Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner died on February 12, 1961 in Monterey, California.

The Navy named a Leahy-class cruiser after him, the USS Richmond K. Turner (CG-20) .
