Alfred Fischel (embryologist)

Alfred Fischel (born September 28, 1868 in Tschimelitz , † January 12, 1938 in Vienna ) was an Austrian embryologist.

Fischel received his doctorate in medicine in Prague in 1894 and completed his habilitation in anatomy and embryology in 1898. In 1903 he became an associate professor at the German University in Prague and in 1910 became head of the newly established department for experimental morphology. In 1916 he moved to the University of Vienna as director of the Institute for Embryology and in 1921 he became a full professor there. In 1935 he gave up his chair due to illness.

He examined malformations with experimental morphology and dealt with the development mechanics of organs (most recently the gonads and the liver).

On February 18, 1907 ( matriculation no. 3231 ) he became a member of the Leopoldina . He was co-editor of the Journal of Scientific Biology.
