Alfred Maultasch

Alfred Maultasch (born November 22, 1914 in Salzburg ; † September 5, 2006 there ) was an Austrian composer and clarinetist .

Life

Alfred Maultasch was born in Salzburg in 1914. He studied clarinet and piano at the Mozarteum and became a clarinet teacher himself there after passing his exam. He later played under the direction of Bernhard Paumgartner and Herbert von Karajan and was active in the Vienna Radio Orchestra , Cologne Radio and the Hamburg Opera . Between 1939 and 1944 he served in World War II and was badly wounded in the war against the Soviet Union . After military service he became a clarinetist in the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg and in 1948 founded a radio orchestra for the ORF predecessor "Rot-Weiß-Rot", which performed two live concerts per week. The first compositions were also written for this small orchestra; they were hits in the style of the time. Maultasch was also frequently active as a soloist and played works by Reger , Hindemith and Weber, as well as the saxophone rhapsody by Debussy .

After working in Cologne and at the Hamburg Opera, he retired and took private composition lessons with Manfred Stahnke in Hamburg. Since then, around 40 works have been created, including three symphonies.
