Manfred Stahnke

Manfred Stahnke (born October 30, 1951 in Kiel ) is a German composer and musicologist.

He writes chamber music, orchestral music and stage works. He also expresses himself in various writings.

Life

Manfred Stahnke grew up as the son of East German parents (mother from Lyck in East Prussia, father from Mierau near Danzig ) in Bad Segeberg . He learned violin and piano, improvised at an early age, and at the age of 14 received theory lessons in Lübeck . At the age of 18 he went to Freiburg im Breisgau to study composition with Wolfgang Fortner . He passed the state examination with him at the age of 21. Manfred Stahnke continued studying with Klaus Huber and Brian Ferneyhough (then Huber's assistant) and in 1974 went to Hamburg to study with György Ligeti , who became his main teacher. He also received his doctorate in musicology on Pierre Boulez under Constantin Floros in 1979 and studied computer music (John Melby, John Chowning) and microtonality ( Ben Johnston ) in the USA (Stanford, California and Urbana, Illinois) in 1979/80 . In 1983 he was awarded the Beethoven Prize of the city of Bonn. He has been a member of the Free Academy of the Arts Hamburg since 1999 and currently (2018) heads the music section there. He is professor emeritus for composition and music theory at the University of Music and Theater in Hamburg.
