Alfred Mond, 1st Baron Melchett
Alfred Moritz Mond, 1st Baron Melchett (born October 23, 1868 in Farnworth , Cheshire , † December 27, 1930 in London ), was a British industrialist and politician .
biography
The son of of Germany coming chemist Ludwig Mond and his wife Frida, born Löwenthal, initially worked in industry and there most recently as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mond Nickel Co., a subsidiary of Brunner-Mond AG, which his father co-founded.
Mond also began to get involved politically. In 1900 he competed for the Liberals in Salford South - and lost. In 1903 he joined the National League of Young Liberals. In January 1906, as a candidate in Chester, he succeeded in entering the House of Commons , where he represented the interests of the Liberal Party until 1928 . During the First World War he was appointed first government commissioner for buildings (Commissioner of Works) by Prime Minister David Lloyd George in 1916 and held this office until 1921. Between 1921 and 1922 he was finally Minister of Health (Minister of Health) in the cabinet of Prime Minister Lloyd George.
When Brunner-Mond AG merged with Nobel Explosives, the United Alcali Company and the British Dyestuffs Corporation to form Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1926 , he played a major role in this and then became Chairman of ICI. As a strong advocate of industrial cooperation , he initiated the Mond Turner Conference in 1927/28 together with President Ben Turner of the Trades Union Congress , the umbrella organization of the British trade unions, which subsequently led to the establishment of the National Council of Industry.
For his services he was raised to the hereditary nobility in 1928 as Baron Melchett of Langford .
In addition to the first President of Turkey , Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , his name was the namesake for the 'World Controller' Mustapha Mond in Aldous Huxley's 1932 dystopian novel " Brave New World ".
