Otto von Velsen (born September 19, 1869 in Dortmund , † March 5, 1945 in Berlin ) was a German mining official and entrepreneur. He was one of the top representatives of German hard coal mining in the Weimar Republic .

family

Otto von Velsen's parents were the royal mountain ridge Wilhelm von Velsen (1828–1894) and Caroline Vogt (1837–1917), known as Schulze Höing . His younger brother was the later district president of Hanover, Friedrich von Velsen (1871-1953). His cousin was the writer and women's rights activist Dorothee von Velsen (1883–1970).

Career

After completing school in Dortmund and studying, von Velsen worked as an assessor in 1897 and as a mining assessor in the Dortmund upper mining district in 1898 . In 1901 he moved to the Upper Silesian coal field in Zabrze as a mining inspector . From 1904 to 1917 he held the position of a mine director or director of the mining inspection in Knurów , in 1910 he was appointed to the mountain ridge , and in 1913 he was promoted to the upper mountain ridge . From 1914 to 1916 he took part in the cuirassier regiment "von Driesen" (Westphalian) No. 4 in the First World War. He was awarded the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class and retired as Rittmeister d.R. out.

After leaving the civil service, von Velsen succeeded on August 1, 1917 Bergrat Heinrich Lindner (1857-1917) as board member and general director of the mining company Hibernia & Shamrock in Herne, which was majority-owned in the same year ; in addition, he was general director of the mining company from 1926. AG Recklinghausen. He held both posts until October 1, 1935. In 1918 and 1919 he was a member of the Westphalian provincial council and city councilor for the city of Herne .

In Berlin, in addition to his actual work, he became known in particular for his leading role during the Ruhr War and his involvement in the subsequent negotiations and conclusions of the MICUM Agreement as a member of the Commission of Six .

In 1932 he publicly warned against Adolf Hitler's coming to power , so that for political reasons he had to resign most of his offices by 1935. Otto von Velsen moved his residence to Berlin-Zehlendorf , where he died in 1945. His reburial in the Herner Südfriedhof probably happened towards the end of the 1950s.
