Alfred Nau (born November 21, 1906 in Barmen , today part of Wuppertal , † May 18, 1983 in Bonn ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

biography

For years, Nau was one of the most important members of the internal party organization and made a significant contribution to establishing the Friedrich Ebert Foundation after 1945. He was honorary president of the Socialist International .

Nau joined the SAJ , the youth organization at the time , in 1922 and the SPD in 1925. The trained insurance salesman came in 1928 as a trainee to the party executive committee in Berlin and in 1929 became assistant to the main cashier Konrad Ludwig . Nau fled to Czechoslovakia in 1933 , but soon returned. He worked as a district agent for an insurance company and used his extensive travels to maintain contact in a resistance network . He was arrested by the Gestapo 14 times for this and spent 14 months in custody in 1935/36 before he had to be acquitted for lack of evidence. He was a soldier from 1942 to 1945.

In 1946 Nau was elected to the federal executive committee of the SPD as party cashier, an office which he held until 1975 - later as treasurer . In June 1958, he became a member of the supervisory board of Concentration GmbH , a significant interest group of the SPD's own publishing and business enterprises. He headed the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung for 13 years (from 1970) until his death and was personally committed to establishing the archive of social democracy .

Nau was buried in the forest cemetery in Bonn- Bad Godesberg .
