Alfred Paul Dorjahn

Alfred Paul Dorjahn (born July 11, 1894 in Palatine Township, Illinois , † June 23, 1986 in Eugene, Oregon ) was an American classical philologist .

Life

Alfred Paul Dorjahn was the son of the German-born couple Joachim Henry and Wilhelmine Melanie Dorjahn. His father was a minister in the evangelical and reformed church. Dorjahn studied Classical Philology at the University of Chicago , where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1917 . He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa . From 1918 to 1920 he worked as a teacher at Pillsbury Academy, from 1922 to his doctorate in 1924 as a lecturer at Northwestern University . In his doctoral thesis he dealt with the political amnesty in Athens in 403 BC. Chr.

After receiving his doctorate, Dorjahn worked as a lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis and from 1925 as an assistant professor at Northwestern University . In 1939 he was appointed full professor and chairman of the Department of Classical Languages , and in 1941 John Evans Professor of Latin . He was visiting professor at Rosary College , Michigan State University and Ohio State University . In 1962 Dorjahn retired. From 1963 to 1973 he held lectures and seminars as a visiting professor at Loyola University Chicago . He died on June 23, 1986, a few weeks before the age of 92, in Eugene, Oregon .

Alfred Paul Dorjahn wrote more than 125 essays and reviews in his field. His research focused on the Attic court speech (especially of Demosthenes ), the Hellenica of Xenophon and the writing De aedificiis of Prokopios of Caesarea . Dorjahn was one of the first American philologists to hold special seminars on translation into English. The Classical Association of the Middle West and South , of which he was chairman from 1939 to 1940, elected him Classics Professor of the Year in 1969 .
