from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfred Schellenberger (born November 14, 1928 in Chemnitz ) is a German biochemist. He was a professor at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg .

Life

Schellenberger studied chemistry in Dresden, Rostock and Halle from 1947, graduating in 1952. He received his doctorate in Halle in 1956 and qualified as a professor in Halle in 1962 (on the biochemistry of pyruvic acid ) and was there from 1964 private lecturer in organic chemistry. In 1967 he became professor of biochemistry with a teaching assignment and in 1969 full professor. From 1972 he headed the biochemistry department there. In retirement he lives in Potsdam.

Schellenberger dealt with protein research and enzymes and built a research focus on them at the University of Halle with colleagues like Gunter Fischer. In particular, he dealt with oxo acids , with thiamine pyrophosphates as a coenzyme , particularly in pyruvate decarboxylase and pyruvate dehydrogenase , and from the mid-1970s on organic polymers (especially polystyrenes ) as a means to bind enzymes.

In 1970 he became a member of the Leopoldina , whose Medal of Merit he received in 1998.

He also published books (with Martin Treu and Ralf-Torsten Speler, Leucorea (pictures on the history of the University of Wittenberg), 1999; research under suspicion: experiences from everyday scientific life in the GDR, 2008; environment 2000, the future living space of people) a narrative (Streit der Engel, Mitteldeutscher Verlag 2015) and poetry (Spiegelungen, Lyrische Experimente, Mitteldeutscher Verlag 2016).
