Gunter S. Fischer

Gunter S. Fischer (born May 23, 1943 in Altenburg ) is a German biochemist .

Life

After attending elementary and high school, Fischer completed an apprenticeship as a skilled worker in chemical production in the Leuna works in Merseburg . From 1962 to 1967 he studied chemistry at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and obtained his diploma from Wolfgang Langenbeck . In 1971 he was at the Department of Biochemistry of the MLU with the work -Ketosäureamiden alpha in terms of their biological function studies on the structure and reactivity of alpha-keto acids and doctorate . He then worked as an independent scientist and teaching assistant in the biology department of the MLU. In 1979 he completed his habilitation in biochemistry with the thesis The biochemical view of the amide group reactivity . In 1987 Fischer went to Berlin as a scientist at the Biotechnical Institute of the Pharmaceutical Combine GERMED .

In 1989/1990 Fischer was head of the biochemistry department at the MLU, but in 1990 he went to the University of Würzburg for a visiting professorship . From 1992 to 1997 he was group leader of the working group “Enzymology of Peptide Binding” of the Max Planck Society . In 1992 Fischer received the professorship for molecular biochemistry at the Institute for Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg . From 1997, Fischer was managing director of the Max Planck Research Center for Enzymology of Protein Folding in Halle (Saale) , which was closed on December 31, 2012 . From 2013 Fischer has been Emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry , Göttingen .

From 1996 to 1999 Fischer was Vice President of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh). From 2000 to 2010, Fischer was Vice President of the Leopoldina .

Act

Fischer focused in particular on the chemistry of proteolytic reactions , in particular organic-chemical studies on peptide substrates of proteases and specific proteases, the catalytic mechanism of serine proteases , with the inactivation of serine and cysteine proteases with proline specific proteases. He researched the uses of enzymes for laboratory diagnostics , carrier-fixed enzymes and, in particular, protein folding and proline chemistry. Fischer discovered a new class of conformation-changing enzymes, the peptidyl-prolyl-cis-trans-isomerases , also known as foldases.
