Alfred Thiel (born May 25, 1879 in Waldenburg (Silesia) , † June 20, 1942 in Marburg ) was a German chemist and professor at the University of Marburg .

life and work

Thiel studied chemistry in Breslau, Munich and Clausthal from 1897 to 1900; his teacher at the time together in Clausthal was Friedrich Wilhelm Küster . He received his doctorate in Gießen in 1900, completed his habilitation in physical chemistry in Münster in 1904 and then worked there as a private lecturer. In 1907 he became head of department at the Chemical Institute in Münster and in 1909 an associate professor. In 1911 he became the first scheduled associate professor at the University of Marburg . In 1913 his own institute for physical chemistry was set up, in 1919 he became a full professor and first director of the institute for physical chemistry. In 1926/1927 he was dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and in 1931/1932 the rector of the university. In November 1933 he signed the confession of the German professors about Adolf Hitler . In 1941 he was given leave of absence for health reasons. His assistant was Ernst Baars . Thiel's grave is on the main cemetery in Marburg, Ockershäuser Allee.

Thiel researched a. a. the element indium , the dissociation constant of dissolved carbon dioxide and the chemical indicators .

Chemists are familiar with his name from the book Rechentafeln für die Chemische Analytik published by Friedrich Wilhelm Küster for the first time in 1894 , which he continued from 1917 to 1942 and which is currently (2016) in its 108th edition.
