Friedrich Wilhelm Küster

Life

The son of a landowner passed his Abitur at a Berlin high school, studied mathematics and natural sciences in Berlin, Munich and Marburg until his doctorate in 1889 under Theodor Zincke at the University of Marburg . In 1891 he completed his habilitation in physical chemistry in Marburg. From 1888 to 1896 Küster was a research assistant at Zincke and in 1896 received the title of professor. In the same year he switched to a paid assistant position at the Physico-Chemical Institute at Walther Nernst in Göttingen. 1897 to 1899 went to the University of Breslau , where he was head of department at Albert Ladenburg's chemical institute and habilitated in chemistry in 1897. From 1899 to 1904 he was a full professor in Clausthal. He then worked as a private scholar in Charlottenburg near Berlin from 1905 and in Müncheberg from 1907 and founded a fruit farm in Schönerberg near Berlin. In 1917 one was killed in a swimming accident.

He devoted himself to a new branch of chemistry suggested by Wilhelm Ostwald : physical chemistry . He researched chemical analysis , especially reaction kinetics , conductivity titration and volumetry .

Chemists are familiar with his name from his book Rechentafeln für die Chemische Analytik , first published in 1894 , which is currently (2016) in its 108th edition.
